Provocateur (與諜同謀): Episode 2 Recap

After the deaths of his first and second wife, cosmetic mogul Cheuk Gwan Lam tries to turn over a new leaf. As fate would have it, he encounters a resourceful young man known as Ringo Poon, through whom he sees a younger version of himself. Cheuk Gwan Lam develops a familial attachment towards Ringo. The young man also wins the favor of Cheuk’s secretary Rachel Chan, who believes that Ringo would lead the company, Endless Beauty, to success. Rachel, still mourning over the disappearance of her husband Vincent many years ago, drowns herself with work. Endless Beauty, as well as Cheuk Gwan Lam himself, becomes her sole purpose in life. Ringo exploits the trust Rachel has in him, also winning Cheuk Gwan Lam’s approval. Little do they know that Ringo is actually secretly conspiring with a team of talented people on the sly to steal trade secrets from large corporations for money. Ringo has been planning this for years, seeking the best opportunity to take destructive revenge on Endless Beauty.

Cheuk Gwan Lam, Rachel, and Cheuk’s driver Chang Ging Sang are at a wonton noodles place eating. They see a realtor approach the grandma owner to badger her to sell but she refuses. Cheuk Gwan Lam tells Rachel to approach the grandma and offer her HK$800 thousand a month as rent for this store. This would allow the grandma to retire comfortably and they would have a prime location for a new store; it’s a win-win situation.

When they return to the company, they find a scene being caused by the baby mama of one of their employees – Alen. She’s making demands for Alen to take responsibility for their child. Cheuk Gwan Lam listens to a bit and then walks away. Chang Ging Sang and Rachel tell the woman this is a private company and asks her to leave.

Later, Alen goes to Cheuk Gwan Lam’s office to explain the situation. Cheuk Gwan Lam tells him he has no interest in his personal life. Then he dismisses him and tells him to pack his stuff because he’s fired. Alen tries to explain and beg for another chance but Cheuk Gwan Lam’s decision is firm. Alen is getting fired because of his mishap at the product launch event, not his messy life.

Rachel asks him if he’s really firing him for that incident and not what happened earlier in the day. Cheuk Gwan Lam tells her to think about it.

The woman causing a scene earlier, meets up with Ringo in a cafe. He gives her an envelop with a check for HK$30,000 in it. She thanks him and leaves.

Rachel is walking on the streets when she comes across three guys (Ringo, Cyrus, and Turtle) trying to hustle an old man selling fruits from a cart. She steps in to help him and asks the crowd watching to help out by buying the fruits. They all rush to buy and the old man sells out. Rachel then tells the three guys to scram.

Afterwards, the old cart owner thanks Rachel for her help. As they’re walking back, they run into the three guys again. She wants to go yell at them but the old man stops her. He explains that they’re actually good guys and that they were working together to help him sell his fruits.

Cheuk Gwan Lam and Rachel arrive at the office to find all their employees immerse in reading a book. It’s self-encouraging book and mediocre at best. Since it’s mediocre, Cheuk Gwan Lam wonders why is everyone reading it then. Apparently an office worker  at a bookstore messed up the numbers in their accounting books, inputting 1000 sales instead of 100. The store owner refuses to let him correct it and is demanding he cover the difference. Since there’s no way the office worker can do that, he went online and begged people to help him. Everyone rushed to buy the books and they sold more than 1000 in a week.

Cheuk Gwan Lam laughs after hearing this story and thinks they’ve all been had. He sees through it as a clever scheme that appeals to people’s emotions. Then he asks Rachel to go find out who this person is.

Rachel goes to see the bookstore owner. At first he refuses to admit to this being a scheme but then Rachel entices him with a potential deal to work with Cheuk Gwan Lam when he decides to release a book in the future. The owner falls for it and agrees to tell her.

Rachel reports back to Cheuk Gwan Lam what she finds out and he’s determined hire this new talent for their company.

Rachel goes to find Ringo at his hotel room. He had just woken up and just closes the door in her face mid-conversation. This doesn’t deter her. She continues to tail him and follows him around everywhere, trying to get him to talk to her about their offer. He plays with her a little longer and gets her to agree to help him win a car. All she has to do be the last one standing with one hand on the car to win.

Hours later, Ringo returns to find her the last one standing. He waits until the last five seconds to scare her and gets her to stop touching the car. She loses and waddles away to go use the bathroom.

The next day, Ringo goes to meet with Cheuk Gwan Lam. During the meeting, Cheuk Gwan Lam gives an analysis of Ringo’s personality to him and tells him that Endless Beauty is a perfect fit for Ringo’s need to be constantly challenged. Ringo only has one condition – he doesn’t care for his salary amount – he wants a piece of the profit sharing. Cheuk Gwan Lam agrees and welcomes him into the company.

Cheuk Gwan Lam is on the phone with his daughter Mani, who is out of the country on a working holiday. They talk briefly before he ends the call on the pretense that international phone calls are expensive. Rachel calls him out on it and he admits that if he talks any longer, he might say some cheesy stuff that will have her laughing at him.

The two arrive at the golf course to have a game with one of their big clients but said client seems to be late. Rachel then points out that they’ve arrived; the “client” is Mani. She gives her father a huge surprise. She came back to work at her father’s company.

Despite the position being filled already, he still makes an exception for her. Mani is ecstatic.

Ringo and Mani are introduced to each other and then to the team. From the introductions, the two seem to be completely different work styles. Mani is more no-nonsense types and Ringo is the easy going fun type.

After introductions, the three employees under Mani throw out suggestions for lunch so that they can get to know each other better. Mani prefers that they do their meetings first, after all they’re there to work.

During the meeting, Mani asks they to give her some ideas. Everything they throw out, she’s already familiar with it already. She ends up telling them to write up a proposal to be handed in tomorrow.

In Ringo’s team meeting, his team members are a bit stiff and uncomfortable looking. He reminds them that they should let loose and have fun and this raises their spirits up.

At lunch time, Ringo approaches Rachel and invites her to go grab lunch with him and his team. While he’s standing there, he takes in the stuff on her desk. It’s all cat themed.

Rachel rejects his invite and he lets it go.

Cheuk Gwan Lam goes to see Rachel during lunch and asks about how Mani is doing. Rachel slowly figures out that Ringo is there to help ground Mani and maybe change her hard-hitting work personality while Mani is there to continue to challenge Ringo so he doesn’t get bored and leave.

Cheuk Gwan Lam returns home and finds Mani hard at work. He tells her that he doesn’t want her working too hard but she has to prove to other people that she didn’t get her position due to being his daughter. Nonetheless, Cheuk Gwan Lam tells her she has to remember to eat and sleep at appropriate times and no overworking otherwise he’s going to fire her. After all, he did promise her mother that he’ll take good care of her. Mani promises.

Cheuk Gwan Lam has reviewed both Ringo and Mani’s proposals and decide to go with Mani’s idea of using their makeup products that are almost expiring to put on a makeup event for the less fortunate children to promote a good environmental protection image. Ringo congratulates her.

After they return to their desk, Ringo goes over to Rachel’s desk and puts a small cat sculpture on her desk. Rachel thanks him then excuses herself to answer a phone call from a Mr. Hong.

Mani and her team starts working on the new promotion.

In the middle of the night, two guys in black enter the storage room that has boxes of  Endless Beauty’s supplies. Yan Yan is smiling deviously while doing something on her computer.

Cheuk Gwan Lam is checking over the promotional poster when Ringo enters his office. He discovers a major mistake on the poster and confronts Mani about it. The expiration date on the make up products expired a month earlier. Cheuk Gwan Lam tells them to withdraw everything to start damage control but it’s too late. Ringo tells them that someone caught it and put it online already. Mani volunteers to step out to correct this mistake but it won’t work. Ringo comes up with an idea to fix this mess.

A press conference is held regarding the expired make up products. Cheuk Gwan Lam explains that no expired products were used on the children. Instead the products are used for the children to draw on and create their own masks. This is their real event to show the uses of expired make up products.

At the warehouse, Ringo, Cyrus, and Turtle drink to a job well done. Cyrus and Turtle worked through the night to change the expiration date on all products in the storage room and Yan Yan worked on changing the expiration date on the poster and putting it up online.

That night, Ringo receives a text message from a realtor telling him that his apartment is done and ready and he could move in any time. He then switches to watch a video feed on his computer. The cat he put on Rachel’s desk is actually a hidden camera.
